Moving to university is exciting.
Also slightly chaotic.

One minute you're celebrating getting into uni.
The next you're standing in your bedroom wondering how you're supposed to pack your entire life into one car boot.

The good news: you don't need to bring everything.

The bad news: there are a few things you really don't want to forget… like your bedding. Or your laptop charger. Or plates.

This ultimate university packing list for UK students covers everything you actually need for student accommodation.

Let’s get you packed.

First: What Your Student Accommodation Usually Includes

Before you start packing like you're moving house, check what your student accommodation already provides.

Most UK student rooms usually include:

Bed and mattress

Desk and chair

Wardrobe

Curtains or blinds

Shelving or drawers

A bin

Basic kitchen appliances (in shared kitchens)

So you don’t need furniture.

But you do need everything that makes the room livable.

Basically:
Think hotel room with zero supplies.

Bedroom Essentials (Your New Home Base)

Your room is where you'll sleep, study, procrastinate, scroll TikTok and occasionally panic about deadlines.

So comfort matters.

Bedding

Duvet

Duvet covers

Bed sheets

Pillowcases

Pillows

Mattress protector

Blanket or throw

Pro tip: bring two sets of bed sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases

Laundry happens. Eventually.

Clothes Storage

Coat hangers

Laundry basket

Storage boxes

Under-bed organisers

Student rooms are small.
Good storage = less chaos.

Room Comfort

This is where your room stops looking like a prison cell and starts feeling like home.

Bring things like:

Photos of friends and family

Cushions

Posters

Small rug

Room lighting

Soft lighting makes a huge difference in a student room.

Because the big ceiling light?

Rarely the vibe.

A desk lamp or ambient lamp is perfect for late-night studying or winding down.

Study & Desk Setup

Your desk will become:

your office

your Netflix station

your snack storage area

your panic zone during deadlines

Make it functional.

Study Essentials

Laptop

Laptop charger

Notebooks

Pens and pencils

Highlighters

Sticky notes

Folders or binders

Backpack

Desk Upgrades

Small upgrades make studying easier:

Desk lamp

Desk organiser

Laptop stand

Extension lead

USB charge adapters (most modern student gadgets and lighting are USB powered).

An extension lead is especially important as student rooms often have sockets in the most inconvenient places possible.

Bathroom Essentials

Whether you have an ensuite or a shared bathroom, you'll want a few basics.

Toiletries

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Shampoo and conditioner

Shower gel

Deodorant

Hairbrush or comb

Razor and shaving products

Skincare or makeup

Nail clippers

Bathroom Extras

Towels & Robe

Flip-flops or shower shoes (for shared bathrooms)

Wash bag

Toilet roll (seriously, bring some)

Freshers' flu is also a thing, this will happen!

So consider bringing:

Paracetamol

Cold medicine

Plasters

A small first aid kit

Future you will be grateful.

Kitchen Essentials (For Survival Cooking)

If you're in self-catered accommodation, you'll be sharing a kitchen with your flatmates.

Which means:

someone will burn toast

someone will never wash up

someone will own a mysterious pan nobody claims

Start simple.

Crockery

Plates & Bowls

Mugs

Glasses

Cutlery

Knives

Forks

Spoons

Teaspoons

Having your own cutlery set is surprisingly helpful.

Shared kitchens have a magical way of making forks disappear.

Cooking Basics

Frying pan and saucepan

Chopping board

Kitchen knives

Spatula or wooden spoon

Kitchen Extras

Tupperware (for leftovers and food prep)

Tin opener

Bottle opener / Corkscrew

Tea towels

Washing-up sponge

Washing-up liquid

Bin bags

Tupperware is underrated.

Leftovers = cheaper lunches.

Tech Essentials

Student life is basically powered by Wi-Fi and chargers.

Must-Bring Tech

Laptop

Phone

Laptop charger

Phone charger

Headphones

Extension lead

USB drive or external storage

Useful Extras

Portable speaker (bluetooth)

HDMI cable

Portable charger

USB adapters

Adapters are especially helpful if your devices refuse to cooperate with older USB ports.

Tiny tech fixes can save a lot of stress.

Things Students Always Forget

Every year students arrive at university and realise they forgot something obvious.

These are the classic ones:

Extension leads

Desk lamp

Laundry basket

Coat hangers

Shower caddy

Scissors

Bin bags

Storage boxes

Water bottle

Reusable shopping bags

Also:

Many students forget cutlery.

Which makes the first meal… interesting.

Important Documents

Not exciting.

But very important.

Bring things like:

Passport or driving licence

Student finance documents

University acceptance letter

Accommodation contract

Bank card

NHS number or medical details

It's also smart to keep digital copies on your phone, laptop, cloud, or backup storage.

It's a good idea that important documents and valuables should be locked safely away.

Just in case.

Clothes to Bring to University

You don’t need your entire wardrobe.

But you’ll want a mix of things for different situations.

Everyday Clothes

T-shirts

Hoodies

Jeans

Joggers

Trainers

Useful Extras

Smart outfit (for interviews or events)

Raincoat or umbrella

Gym clothes

Pyjamas

Slippers

Important reminder:

This is the UK.

Bring something waterproof.

Things NOT to Bring to University

Students often pack way too much.

Here are a few things you probably don't need.

Candles

Student accommodation on campus and in private houses usually bans open flames. Leave them at home. If candles are a must use LED electric candles.

Too Many Kitchen Appliances

You don't need:

toastie makers

blenders

waffle machines

Your campus kitchen will already have basics like a kettle.

And if six students bring six kettles… things get weird.

Furniture

Your campus room will already be furnished.

No need to bring desks, chairs or wardrobes (that's for years 2 and 3 in shared houses)

A Printer

Most universities have cheap campus printing.

Printers are bulky and expensive to run.

Student Room Upgrades Worth Packing

These aren't all essential.

But they make student life a lot nicer.

Consider bringing things like:

Ambient lighting (LED Strips are very popular)

Over-door Storage organisers and hooks (hooks are a must have)

Heater (for winter, campus room heating can be questionable)

Heated electric blanket (for winter)

Fan (for summer)

Door stop wedge (keeping your room door open invites others in for socialising)

Small upgrades can make your room feel more comfortable and organised.

And honestly… a nicer place to spend time during long study sessions.

Final Student Packing Advice

Remember:

You're moving to university.

Not relocating your entire childhood bedroom.

You can always buy extra things once you arrive.

Start with the essentials.

Leave space for things you'll pick up during the year.

And most importantly…

Bring things that make your room feel like your space.
